New York Republicans: Outrage, glee over Trump

Astorino, the party’s 2014 gubernatorial nominee and a potential 2018 candidate, was one of several speakers who tried to put a positive spin on the upheaval that Trump’s candidacy has brought to the state GOP ranks.

Establishment Republicans — who avoided that term as if it were a deadly contagion — expressed a larger helping of disdain for Trump.

On the other side were Trump’s supporters — none more effusive than Buffalo businessman and 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino.

“People have been festering with this anger,” Paladino said to convention delegates who packed into the room at the Buffalo Marriott HarborCenter.

Humphrey noted that he is a longtime friend and former employer of Wendy Long, who on Friday was designated as the GOP candidate to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer in November.

State GOP Chairman Ed Cox, a frequent target of Paladino’s ire, remained neutral on a presidential endorsement.

There were other indications that while Trump’s insurgent campaign has riled the party, it might bring out long-dormant voters in November.
