Rabid raccoons discovered in Rodman, Antwerp

pLocal public health officials say two more rabid raccoons have been found in Jefferson County. /ppAddresses were not provided, but officials say one raccoon was discovered in the town of Rodman and the other was found in the town of Antwerp./ppNeither animal is believed to have had contact with any other animals or people; however, these raccoons represent the 12th and 13th cases of rabies discovered in the county since December 2015./ppEarlier this month, a rabid raccoon was found near Route 193 in Ellisburg. Before that, two rabid raccoons were found in the Watertown area, one on West Prospect Street and another on Archer Road in Burrville. Eight rabid skunks were also found throughout the county between December and January./ppRabies is a fatal disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It can take several weeks to several months for rabies symptoms to appear, and early treatment after exposure can prevent rabies in humans and pets who are up-to-date on the vaccination./ppFor more information about rabies, contact the county’s Public Health Service at 786-3770. /p
