Concerts, animals, fireworks and more on tap at Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair

pGOUVERNEUR — A free fireworks show has been added to this year’s Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair which once again features food, music, carnival rides, animals and more./ppThe fair runs from Tuesday through Sunday at the fairgrounds, 85 E. Barney St. Admission is free. Parking is $5. /ppThe fair begins with harness racing at 11 a.m. on opening day, followed by the carnival rides opening at 4 p.m. The remaining days the fair runs from 1 to 11 p.m. /ppA performance by The Charlie Daniels Band at 8 p.m. Tuesday is a highlight of this year’s fair. The Waydown Wailers, a local band that plays an eclectic mix of country rock, will take the stage at 6 p.m. as the opening band followed by the fair’s opening ceremonies at 7 p.m./ppA larger stage that’s about 30 inches higher off the ground than the previous stage was constructed at the grandstand. Also, new bleachers were installed./pp“Over the years we’ve talked about it, but with The Charlie Daniels Band coming we decided it was time to do it,” said Donald A. Peck, the fair’s longtime manager. “It will improve viewer visibility for all the entertainment we have in the grandstand.”/ppThe cattle exhibit will run all week with 330 dairy cattle on display, a fair record. This year’s agriculture section also features rabbits, goats, sheep, poultry, beef cows and for the first time, a yak./ppColeman Brothers Shows will once again provide a variety of midway rides for all ages, including kiddie rides./ppWristband purchasers will be allowed unlimited rides on Saturday. Wristbands purchased at the door sell for $25 and are valid from 1 to 7 p.m./ppThe free fireworks show begins at 10 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds./ppMr. Peck said the weeklong fair is a family oriented event that offers a range of activities for all ages./pp“We have lots of food, vendors and one of the biggest cattle shows in the Northeast,” Mr. Peck said. “There’s lots of things to see and do and we have tried to keep it affordable for families.”/ppThe petting zoo is presented by Commerford Petting Zoo, Goshen, Conn.
