Local dog fights to live after long journey to WNY

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — A dog in Orchard Park is looking for a new “leash” on life. He already fought two battles to get to where he is today, and now, he’s facing another one.

Meet Lazaro, the 1-year-old chow is originally from the country of Columbia. He almost died after his neck was severely wounded from a barb wire leash.

Brittany Turner, Lazaro’s current owner said, “It barely missed the trachea, he had to have numerous surgeries along with reconstructive surgeries and they did not think that he was even going to make it.”

Brittany Turner wanted to rescue him after seeing photos of him online. After Lazaro survived, he faced another challenge, getting out of Columbia and making it to the United States.

“He ended up flying on three cargo flights to get all of the way to Buffalo in the hands of Buffalo Cares Animal Rescue, and when he was medically cleared and put online for adoption, we filled out an application and in March of this year, we signed the adoption papers.”

After several months – Lazaro fully recovered and did a complete 180 – but in July he had a severe nose bleed.

The Turners say it lasted for 12 hours straight, and they took him to the vet who determined that he was facing a deadly sometimes undetectable disease that he mostly likely contracted in Columbia. Lazaro’s only option was in Ithaca, New York at Cornell University. The Turners needed help to pay for the vet expenses, and more than $3,000 was raised on GoFundMe.

Just last week – Lazaro received treatment at Cornell and was prescribed a slew of medications. His condition has greatly improved. The Turners are thankful for the donations, and say that Lazaro has made such a long and remarkable journey not only into to their home, but into their hearts.

Turner said, “My main focus is to make sure that he lives the happiest for as long as he can, so if that is a month, a year, or 8 years, we are just really happy to have him in our family.”
