The 10 a.m. start Friday morning did not inhibit the Bethlehem boys’ basketball team in terms of energy or defensive focus.

Bethlehem shook off its shooting woes from the first half and went 12-for-18 after intermission to help secure a 53-34 victory over the Cadets in the title game of the Christian Brothers Academy’s Alumni Holiday Tournament.

The Eagles (7-2), despite shooting 26 percent in the opening half, entered halftime with a remarkable level of confidence owning just a 19-12 lead.

After Kyle Duncan drained a 3-pointer for La Salle to cut its deficit to 23-15, Bethlehem sophomore guard Michael Ortale proceeded to drain three straight from long range to extend the advantage to 32-15 with 2:33 left in the third quarter.

Bethlehem did a better job of converging on shooters in its zone and proceeded to limit La Salle to 7-for-28 shooting over the final 16 minutes.

Thompson, who scored a season-best 28 points Wednesday in a 72-61 win over St. Anthony’s, earned tourney Most Valuable Player honors and Ortale joined La Salle’s Joe DeLollo and Ray Evans on the all-tournament team.

[…] what the Eagles lack in size, they more than compensate for with activity level and intelligence on the floor.
