Capital Region spelling bee contestant's loss is 'irrevocable'

After making it through two preliminary rounds of the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, Dhruv Kaderu missed a trip to the finals by one letter Wednesday, spelling the 11-letter word with an “i” instead of an “o.” Kaderu, 14, of Wappingers Falls, was eliminated in the third round, where spellers were for the first time presented with words from the entire Merriam-Webster Unabridged dictionary, the official and sole source of spelling for the Bee. Yesterday, Kaderu competed in the first preliminary round of the Bee, a written test that consists of 12 spelling words and 14 vocabulary words, according to the Bee’s website.
