HOPE MILLS, NC — A graveside service for James F. “Spud” Backus Sr., 72, will be held on Thursday, November 16th at 12:00 noon at the Hermon Cemetery with Rev. Ralph Browning officiating. Arrangements are with Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

James passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

James is survived by two children Andrew and his wife Robin of Heuvelton, and James Jr. and his wife Vickie of Harrisville, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a sister June Backus of Canton.

James was born on February 21, 1945 in Pyrites, the son of Ned and Murial Brabaw Backus.

He attended Hugh C. Williams High School. James entered the Marine Corps., serving his country in the Vietnam War from January 17, 1963 until February 03, 1967. He was a self-employed carpenter for many years. James was a life member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Amvets, The American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed hunting, working with horses, Western and Military History. He is predeceased by his parents, a brother Ned Jr. “Tyner” and a sister Winifred Backus.

Memorial donations in James’ memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
