Enrollment is down at NY's private colleges, but is free tuition to blame?

Enrollment is down at NY's private colleges, but is free tuition to blame?

ALBANY — Private colleges and universities in New York that have historically enrolled students from within the state experienced a steep drop in enrollment this fall compared to a year ago, according to a new report published Tuesday.

The report from the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities notes these schools also shed a significant chunk of their workforce over the same period. Both downward trends, the report implies, are a likely result of the state’s new free-tuition program, which benefits New York residents attending public colleges and universities but not private ones.
