College football: Syracuse to play Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium next season

SYRACUSE — The Syracuse University football team will play Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium next season, Syracuse announced Thursday.The two teams are scheduled to play Nov. 17, 2018 in the Orange’s final nonconference game of the season as part of Notre Dame’s Shamrock Series.“Yankee Stadium is one of the great venues in all of sports,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said in a release. “To play a fantastic opponent like Notre Dame in that building, closer to home, I think is exciting for our fans. As coaches and players, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and something we’re very much looking forward to.”Syracuse last played in Yankee Stadium in the Pinstripe Bowl in 2012, a 38-14 victory over West Virginia. SU also beat Kansas State in the Pinstripe Bowl at the Stadium in 2010.The Orange is 7-1 at the ballpark. It defeated the Irish 14-7 on Thanksgiving in 1963, less than a week after President Kennedy’s assassination. Syracuse also beat Pittsburgh 3-0 on Oct. 20, 1923 in the first football game played at old Yankee Stadium.Notre Dame leads the all-time series with Syracuse 5-3.
