Massena firefighters offering another round of free smoke detectors

MASSENA — A smoke alarm installation program that started last month has gone so well that officials have expanded it.The Massena Volunteer Fire Department, Local 2220 of the International Association of Firefighters and New York state Association of Fire Chiefs partnered in January to provide and install smoke detectors for Massena residents aged 65 and over. They purchased about 200 smoke detectors, some of which are still available for anyone aged 65 and over who is interested in having one installed. Now they want to expand on the success of their smoke detector awareness program through a partnership with Local 2220 of the International Association of Firefighters, according to Thomas C. Miller, the department’s spokesman.“Due to the success of that, the Massena Volunteer Fire Department has purchased 200 more smoke detectors. We want to expand that program. We felt the need to open that up to offer it to more people,” he said. The latest round of smoke detectors will be available to Massena residents, either homeowners or renters, with an income of less than $34,000.“We were fortunate to get a call from (sales manager) Andy St. Thomas from Everything Electric in Potsdam and Malone. He offered us a great deal on the smoke detectors. He was offering some to the fire department in the hope of equipping more homes with smoke detectors,” Mr. Miller said.Eligible residents can call 315-769-2380 or email info@massenafd.org to arrange for professional installation of the smoke alarms. There will be a limit of two per household so the department can offer them to more homes. The smoke detectors must be installed by fire department members between 8 and 11 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and 6 and 8 p.m. Residents can request service on a specific date and time slot and they’ll be notified of their confirmed installation appointment.“They’ll call the fire station at 315-769-2380 and they’ll request an installation,” Mr. Miller said.He stressed the importance of having operational smoke detectors in homes.“Early detection is the most important thing,” he said.
