Section 3 girls basketball: Thousand Islands gets top seed for Class C playoffs

The Thousand Islands girls basketball team was named the top seed for the Section 3 Class C playoffs, which was tops among the 10 Frontier League teams selected to the field at Wednesday morning’s meeting of sectional officials and coaches in Syracuse.The defending champion Vikings (17-2 overall), who captured their first sectional crown last season and are fresh off winning their 10th straight league playoff title on Saturday, will host No. 16 Sherburne-Earlville in a first-round game at 7 p.m. Friday in Clayton.Beaver River (13-7) will also compete in the Class C bracket as the No. 7 seed and is set to host No. 10 Sauquoit Valley in a first-round game Friday at a time to be determined.Other high-seeded area girls teams are Sackets Harbor and Indian River as the second seeds in their respective brackets, and South Jefferson third in Class B. The Patriots (19-1) will receive a first-round bye and host a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. next Tuesday to begin their quest to return to the Class D title game following last season’s 52-48 loss to Immaculate Heart.Defending champion IHC (6-12) was the final team to qualify in Class D as the No. 14 seed and will play at No. 3 Waterville, while Copenhagen (13-7) claimed the sixth seed and will host No. 11 New York Mills. Each of those first-round games will be played Friday at a time to be determined.The Warriors (14-6) are the second seed in Class A and will host No. 7 Fulton in a quarterfinal game at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday. Watertown (6-14) also qualified as the eighth and final seed in that bracket, and will play at top-seeded Jamesville-DeWitt in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday.The Spartans (19-1) were named the third seed in a strong Class B field and will host an opponent to be determined at 7 p.m. Saturday. They will face the winner of tonight’s opening-round game between No. 14 Chittenango and No. 19 Marcellus.South Jefferson has won eight sectional titles over the past 15 years and is seeking their first sectional championship since 2012.General Brown (13-6) secured the No. 9 seed in Class B and will play at No. 8 Skaneateles at 6 p.m. Friday, while No. 13 Lowville (12-8) will open at No. 4 Oneida at 6:30 p.m. Friday.The sectional championship games in all classes are scheduled for March 1 and 2 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
