Five Guys one step closer to Potsdam

POTSDAM — The County Planning Board ceded the possibility of a full review for the new Five Guys fast food restaurant, offering only recommendations for the plan. “It won’t be held for full review, and instead sent back for local action,” said County Planner Matilda M. Larson. The county meeting did offer non-binding suggestions for the plan: a snow removal plan due to the lot’s small size, and a landscaping strip with trees. The store, which will replace the vacant Stewart’s building in the lot on the corner of Market Street and Elderkin Street, is tentative, and still requires a final site review by the Village Planning Board, according to Planning and Development Director Fred J. Hanss. “The meeting will be held on June 7 at the earliest,” he said. The plan calls for the elimination of an entrance and exit on Market Street, leaving the only access on Elderkin Street, Mr. Hanss said. The changes, he said, won’t require permission from the department of transportation and will make entering and exiting safer. The County Planning Board determined there would be no countywide impact from the new Five Guys, thus requiring no County Planning Board meeting, according to Ms. Larson. The building itself would also only be altered in its interior, not its exterior.
