Crematorium gets final go-ahead from Scriba planning board

SCRIBA — The Riverside Cemetery Association has cleared the first hurdle in its plan to open a crematorium on the cemetery grounds. The Scriba Planning Board formally approved the association’s plan, with 13 modifications and requirements, at a meeting Thursday. Now, the association has to decide if it can abide by the modifications and, if so, it must draw up a new site plan for the crematorium to bring back to the planning board. It also has to have its plan OK’d by the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the state Division of Cemeteries. For nearly two years, the Riverside Cemetery Association has been trying to gain approval to build a 50-foot by 30-foot single-story building to accommodate cremation services on the grounds of the cemetery, at 4024 County Route 57 in Scriba. But residents who live near the cemetery have been fighting the crematorium for more than a year, citing environmental and health issues such as toxins that will be emitted from the cremation process.
