MASSENA — The elderly and disabled in the Massena community can get a break on some leaf raking this year, courtesy of Massena Central School fall student-athletes.As they’ve done for several years, the student-athletes will be taking part in Make a Difference Day on Oct. 20 by raking and bagging the leaves. The fall teams include volleyball, soccer, football and swimming. This year’s effort is again being coordinated by Trisha LaBarge in the district’s Athletic Department. She said the schedule was about half full on Tuesday, with room for about eight or nine more yards.“I call the list from the year before. I’ve gotten a lot of phone calls,” she said. The assignments at different neighborhoods around the community are divided among the student-athletes, and coaches will call before going to the homes. The residents are asked to have garbage bags and rakes available, if possible.“Normally we’ll give them two addresses and they’ll go to the houses. It all depends on their schedule. Normally some volunteers will do three lawns. Every house we get is really grateful,” Ms. LaBarge said.Student-athletes who can’t make it on Oct. 20 can schedule another day. For at least one sports team, the 20th is the end of their season. The fall athletes started participating in Make a Difference Day cleanup activities for the elderly and disabled several years ago when Martha Slack was the school’s athletic director, and the tradition has continued over the years as a way to give back to the community that athletic directors say have supported them over the years.Call Ms. LaBarge at 315-764-3700, ext. 3106 before Monday and indicate name, address and phone number of the yard that needs to be raked.
