The lessons after threats drive a black legislator to quit

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The case of a black Vermont legislator who resigned after racist harassment highlights the dangers politicians of color face.

The ordeal of Democratic state Rep. Kiah (KY’-uh) Morris also reinforces that even liberal bubbles like Vermont shouldn’t get too comfortable in their cloaks of inclusivity.

Morris became the state’s first black female legislator in 2014. But racist threats and harassment followed until she quit this year.

Vermont is among the most liberal states but also among the whitest.

Gloria Browne-Marshall is a law professor and expert in race at New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

She says that in a liberal bastion like Vermont, “the majority of people outraged should have been there protecting” Morris.
