Jury deliberates 2nd day with no verdict in NCAA trial

NEW YORK (AP) — A jury has completed a second day of deliberations without a verdict in the trial of three men accused of defrauding schools by giving cash to families of college basketball recruits.

The jury deliberated over eight hours Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.

They are deciding the fate of Adidas sports marketing manager James “Jim” Gatto, aspiring sports agent Christopher Dawkins and Merl Code, a former Adidas consultant. They’ve all pleaded not guilty.

Their lawyers say the men broke no laws and at most violated NCAA rules by helping families as they steered top-tier recruits toward schools sponsored by Adidas.

Jurors gave defense lawyers hope that their arguments found a receptive audience when they asked Tuesday to review the cross-examination of the government’s star witness, a former Adidas consultant.
