ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York apartment building with a history of code violations is being torn down after a fire heavily damaged the structure.

Fire officials say crews were called out Monday morning for a report of a blaze at a three-story building on the city’s southwest side. Flames and smoke were spotted on all floors of the 90-year-old building when firefighters arrived.

Authorities say less than half of the 28 apartments were occupied. All 12 residents got out safely, although one was treated for smoke inhalation.

A firefighter was treated for minor injuries after falling through a floor.

The cause is under investigation.

City officials say the building’s owners were issued 13 code violations. Local media report that other rental properties owned by the same company have been the subject of legal action and rent strikes.
