Apollo Restaurant to close after Dec. 29

WATERTOWN — The owners of the 30-year-old Greek eatery Apollo Restaurant in the Arsenal Plaza will close its doors after its final business day Dec. 29 Michelle Tinsley, who has co-owned it with her husband, William, for 11 years, said they were unable to reach a lease renewal agreement with their landlord, Arsenal Plaza Associates LLC, Albany. Rather than trying to find a new home for their eatery, which employees 13 workers, Mrs. Tinsley said they plan to retire and sell their assets, adding that she hopes someone will reopen the eatery in a new home.“I think some people are really gonna miss it. We’re gonna miss it,” she said, adding that she wanted to give “a big thank you to our customers and thank you to our employees.” The Tinsley family opened the restaurant in 1988 and has served customers Greek cuisine including gyros, souvlaki and falafel in the same location, 1283 Arsenal St., since the beginning. Developer Brian H. Murray, who owns Washington Street Properties, previously approached the couple to offer space downtown, Mrs. Tinsley said. They looked at the Waterbury Fine Jewelers and Farmers Insurance spaces in the Top of the Square Plaza and Mall respectively, with interest in participating in the downtown revitalization movement, but they couldn’t afford to relocate, Mrs. Tinsley said.“We thought ‘Well, it might be a thing to try,’” she said. “The rent would be much more reasonable down there.”
