West Turin house fire detected early, damage minimized

CONSTABLEVILLE — Light sleeping and a quick reaction saved a family and their home from devastation when a fire broke out above the ceiling of a new construction area.Owner of 5735 Kessler Road in the town of West Turin, Dennis Barringer, awoke when he heard a “popping” sound above the ceiling of a living area over the garage, according to the Lewis County fire report.The report said the owner believed the sound was coming from the area of the woodstove pipe. They took their dog, got out of the structure and called 911 at 11:42 p.m. The Constable Volunteer Fire Department was first to the scene and reported seeing heavy fire coming from the roof near the chimney.Fire units from Turin, Boonville, West Leyden and Port Leyden were also on the scene.The fire and damage was contained to the area above the garage and the breezeway.There were no injuries reported.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
