JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — If you’ve driven past UHS Wilson in Johnson City, you may have noticed some construction and work being done.

Back in May 2016, structural concerns caused the Picciano Building right across the street from the main hospital complex to be closed. This building is right next to a parking garage, which also has structural issues and partially collapsed in 2015.

Crews have now begun work to shore up the main, important points of the building. This work will go until early April. After that, UHS officials say demolition will then take place on the 75 percent of the building that’s no longer usable.

“Once that stabilization is in place for the remaining building, then they can make the cut and demolish the 75 percent that comes down,” said Karen McElwee, UHS Director of Construction and Safety Management.

Officials also said that this demolition will be staged and take place all on UHS property, meaning minimal impact to those around the hospital. Once the demolition is complete, renovations to what’s left standing and rebuilding will then take place in the months to follow.
