Broome County Sheriff’s Office gives tips for a safe Halloween

(WBNG) – The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is looking to keep everyone safe this Halloween.

The office posted these tips to their Facebook page:

Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Stapleton emphasized the importance of having authorities look over trick-or-treaters and other community members.

“On Halloween there’s going to be a lot more kids, a lot more foot traffic,” Deputy Stapleton said. “We just want to make sure parents are holding [their child’s] hands, keeping an eye on their children, making sure they’re walking against traffic, using crosswalks, and being careful.”

Inclement weather is expected to hit on the big night causing Stapleton to send a message to those on the roads.

“Anytime we have diminished conditions out there because of rain, it’s harder for drivers to see,” Stapleton said. “Drive slow, drive cautiously and expect the unexpected.”

Captain Kate Newcomb told 12 News the Sheriff’s Office will have six more patrols on duty during the Halloween festivities, but those deputies will also be looking to join in on the fun.

“Our purpose us twofold, we also send the deputies out with candy and we want the deputies to interact with the community,” Captain Newcomb said. “It’s really actually a big hit, we go through a lot of candy and it’s a fun night for everybody. It’s a win-win for us and the community.”
