In college basketball’s equivalent of a bye week, the University at Albany women’s basketball program invited a Division III school to play Wednesday night at SEFCU Arena.

The result was predictable and not particularly riveting.

UAlbany scored the game’s first 24 points and rolled to an 81-21 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham.

“It’s tough,” Great Danes coach Colleen Mullen said. “When I was a player, I didn’t enjoy playing in these games because I didn’t play well. It’s hard to continue to play the way you’re capable of playing, but there is a lot to gain. It was important for our bench to be able to get minutes. We still need those other guards to come along. Depth at the guard was our huge Achilles’ heel last year.”

Even without Morgan Haney, a freshman guard who likely is out for the season with a knee injury, UAlbany (4-5) used 11 players, and all of them scored.

The Devils (2-6), who have just one player taller than 5-foot-10, didn’t get a point until 1:18 into the second quarter, and it took them three free throws (fouled on a 3-pointer) to get that. FDU-Florham missed its first 19 field-goal attempts before Jennah Roman hit a jumper with 8:06 to play in the second quarter.

“We just had to play our game,” said Alexi Schecter, a 6-3 senior who had 11 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes. “It is a little adjustment because now we’re not playing against 6-2 people. We have to reawlize that we have some time, we don’t have to rush our shots. It’s all about us and how we control the game.”

The Danes’ starters averaged barely 20 minutes apiece. UAlbany, which led 47-9 at halftime, shot 49percent. The Devils were 0-for-17 from 3-point range.

Kyara Frames led UAlbany with 13 points. Patricia Conroy scored 11 and Amanda Kantzy 10.
