ENDICOTT (WBNG) — On Sunday, a blood drive was more than a donation, serving as a honor to a man who battled cancer.

The sixth annual blood drive in memory of Bob Scott took place at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, as community members came out to donate blood in memory of Scott.

Scott died six years ago to the day after a battle with cancer. His son, Jamie, told 12 News his father was an avid donor of blood before his death.

Scott added during his father’s treatment he received multiple blood donations, giving Jamie the extra motivation to give back to people in need of blood for transfusions, surgeries, emergencies and more.

“Seeing [Bob] being the benefactor of receiving the blood hit hard for us,” Scott said. “The fact that he used to donate so regularly when he was eligible, before he was diagnosed, before he even needed it, he was donating every time he was eligible. This is kind of a way to carry on his tradition that he really started.”

The number of people in attendance was slightly less than years past, but Scott emphasized those who showed up understood the importance of a drive like this.

“Everybody sees it as a good opportunity to kind of honor his memory, as well as to help people out because donating blood is so important, it’s literally a life and death situation,” Scott said.

Sweet treats such as cookies, coffee, and juice were provided to participants after blood was taken.
